Ilyasah Shabazz and Bernice King Take the Runway for Actively Black at New York Fashion Week

In a powerful display of legacy and style, Ilyasah Shabazz, daughter of Malcolm X, and Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., walked the runway at New York Fashion Week for Actively Black, a Black-owned sportswear brand.

Founded by former NBA player Lanny Smith, Actively Black was created to empower the Black community and provide authentic representation in the fashion world. Smith, who previously played point guard in the NBA Development League, also launched Active Faith Sports, a faith-based apparel line.

The brand’s mission was inspired by Smith’s desire to give back and create meaningful opportunities for Black communities. Actively Black combines bold, culturally inspired designs with a message of empowerment, making it a standout at one of the world’s premier fashion events.

By featuring the daughters of two of the most influential civil rights leaders in American history, the runway show highlighted not just fashion, but also a celebration of Black heritage, activism, and leadership.

As New York Fashion Week continues to showcase diverse voices in fashion, Actively Black’s appearance—and the presence of Shabazz and King—serves as a reminder that style and social impact can walk hand in hand.
