Teena Marie’s Daughter Confirms Biopic and Biography on the Soul Legend is in the Works

A biopic and biography on the late soul singer, Teena Marie, are officially in the works, with her daughter, Alia Rose, confirming the long-awaited projects during an appearance on The Clay Cane Show.

“There’s a book coming out about her life, and I’m working on a film as well. I haven’t really talked about it too much, but it’s finally happening, and I’m so excited because I feel like her story just needs to be told,” Rose shared.

Rose explained that the current endeavor is her second attempt at producing the biopic after shelving earlier efforts nearly a decade ago. She noted that the project will explore themes many viewers will connect with. She also revealed that she’s collaborating with a writer to bring her mother’s story to the screen, while simultaneously developing a book about Marie.

Rose emphasized that she will not be portraying her mother, stressing the importance of casting:

“The audition process is going to be very serious because I don’t play that. I do think there’s somebody out there—one hundred percent—who’s perfect for the role.”

Teena Marie, born born Mary Christine Brockert, recorded a total of 13 studio albums over the course of her career, including one posthumous album, Beautiful, in 2013, which was released and completed by her daughter Alia Rose. Her body of work included classics such as It Must Be Magic, Starchild, and La Doña, showcasing her talents not only as a singer but also as a songwriter, producer, and arranger. Marie earned four Grammy nominations spanning three decades—recognized in 1981, 1982, and 1985 for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and again in 2005 for her comeback album, La Doña. These nominations highlighted both her enduring artistry and her lasting impact on the world of R&B and soul music.

With both a book and film now underway, Alia Rose says her mission is to ensure her mother’s full story—her career triumphs, personal struggles, and lasting impact—is finally told.
