Cleveland J. Broadie was sentenced to 15 years on October 7, with the possibility of being released after serving eight years in prison, after pleading guilty to three reckless conduct charges related to having sex with his wife and two other women without disclosing his HIV-positive status, according to court records.
Prosecutors say Broadie’s wife, Denise Broadie, died from complications related to AIDS on April 2, 2022, just days after testing positive for HIV. Authorities allege that Broadie knew he had HIV as early as 2006 and repeatedly had unprotected sex with his wife, even while she was hospitalized, without informing her of his diagnosis.

His wife was diagnosed with breast cancer three years after their 2014 marriage, according to Fox 5 Atlanta. The cancer returned in 2019 after her remission but eventually cleared up in 2020. Despite the treatment, she was still sick, and further testing showed that she had HIV, which led to full-blown AIDS.
Denise’s daughters, Karen Young and Tammy Hammonds, alleged that their mother had not been sexually active with anyone else, according to WSFA 12.
During court proceedings, prosecutors presented evidence involving additional alleged victims, including a woman whom Broadie allegedly infected in 2009. According to prosecutors, the two decided to remain in a relationship because they both had HIV.

In exchange for Broadie’s negotiated guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to drop the malice murder and felony murder charges related to his wife’s death.
Broadie received credit for time served and will be eligible for probation after completing eight years in confinement. If he is released from confinement after eight years, he will be required to leave Rockdale County, have no contact with the victims’ families, share his medical records with his probation officer, and remain on his HIV medication, according to WSFA 12 News.
