Disney’s ABC has suspended “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” indefinitely after controversial remarks made by late-night host Jimmy Kimmel about conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
During his Monday night monologue, Kimmel addressed the fatal shooting of Kirk at Utah Valley University last week. He went on to criticize efforts by conservatives to distance the suspect, Tyler Robinson, from the MAGA movement, saying they were “desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
The comments quickly drew backlash. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr warned that ABC’s broadcast license could be at risk, intensifying the scrutiny surrounding Kimmel and the network. The timing also coincides with Nexstar’s $6.2 billion merger bid with Tegna, which is still pending FCC approval, according to CNN.
Despite the controversy, a source told CNBC that Kimmel has not been fired. According to the report, Disney plans to meet with the comedian to discuss his remarks and determine the next steps before any potential return to the air.
As of now, ABC has not announced when or if “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will resume broadcasting.
