Michelle Obama unveiled a special skirt, designed by Meredith Koop, ahead of the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center. The skirt features one of Michelle’s favorite portraits of her late mother as a heartfelt tribute.
During remarks shared on the Obamas’ and the Obama Foundation’s social media pages, Michelle revealed that she had kept her skirt a surprise for Barack Obama because she wanted the moment to be special.
In an emotional video, Michelle reflected on how proud her mother, Marian Robinson, was of Barack and how much she loved her son-in-law. Michelle described him as a big dreamer who made those dreams a reality.

An emotional Barack expressed his love and appreciation for his mother-in-law. He described Michelle’s parents as people who embodied love while raising Michelle and her brother, Craig Robinson.
“They represent to me what’s best about this country and what’s best about our values and people who aren’t trying to get every last nickel, and aren’t cutting corners when it comes to values, and treat people high and low with respect and kindness, and handle their business, just salt of the earth, bedrock people,” Barack wrote on his social media page.
“There are people like that all across the South Side of Chicago, and there are people like that all across this great country of ours.”
The grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center is scheduled for Juneteenth.
