James L. Winston a Champion of Black Media to be Celebrated at the 2025 Living Legends Legacy Foundation Gala

James “Jim” L. Winston stands as a pioneering figure in a world where media ownership and representation continue to be central to discussions of equity and justice. As the president of the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters (NABOB), the Harvard Law student graduate has long been an advocate for using his background in law to increase the presence and influence of Black voices in the broadcast industry. His commitment to expanding opportunities for African American broadcasters makes him a perfect candidate to be honored with the A.D. Washington Chairman’s Award at the 2025 Living Legends Legacy Foundation Gala this Friday, October 3, 2025, in Atlanta, GA.

A Legacy of Advocacy and Empowerment

Winston has been at the forefront of promoting the interests of Black broadcasters and advocating for policies that support their growth and sustainability since he was appointed executive director and general counsel for NABOB in 1982. Winston’s outstanding advocacy and push for social change led to NABOB growing to 250 radio stations and 25 television stations, according to the US Black Chambers, Inc. Moreover, Winston’s leadership has brought increased attention to the lack of diversity through the NABOB’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Championing the Next Generation of Black Broadcasters

Winston’s work, in helping to create the NABOB Telecommunication Education and Management Foundation, acts as a catalyst for the Living Legends Foundation, which has also played a crucial role in developing the next generation of Black media professionals. The Living Legends Foundation, through internships, scholarships, and professional development programs, embodies Winston’s vision by ensuring that the next generation of media professionals has the resources and opportunities necessary to elevate Black voices.

As the media landscape continues to evolve, Winston’s influence ensures that the next generation of Black broadcasters is prepared to continue the fight for equity and Black representation.

Advocacy for Fair Ownership

Historically, Black broadcasters have been underrepresented in media ownership, a disparity that has resulted in limited opportunities for African Americans to control the narratives that affect their communities. Winston’s vision for an inclusive media landscape, one where African American voices are not only heard but also control the means of production, has helped to create lasting change. Winston’s leadership serves as an inspiration for countless others in the fight for media justice and fair representation.

The Future is Mighty Bright

The Pittsburgh native’s work continues to make waves in the media industry, and as he is celebrated at the 2025 Living Legends Legacy Foundation Gala, it is clear that his influence will shape the future of Black media for years to come. The gala will provide an opportunity to reflect on the profound impact of his work. The legacy of Winston represents the power of advocacy, vision, and the unwavering belief that Black media representation matters.
