Allen Media Group’s HBCU GO, the nation’s leading media platform dedicated to HBCU sports and culture, has officially announced the 2025 HBCU GO Football Players of the Year, recognizing the most outstanding offensive and defensive performers across HBCU football.
Earning this year’s top honors are Curtis Allen, running back at Virginia Union, who was named Offensive Player of the Year, and Michael Lunz II, linebacker from South Carolina State, who captured Defensive Player of the Year recognition.

Their performances and accolades were discussed during a special HBCU GO roundtable featuring Tolly Carr, Steve Wyche, Nia Symone, James Hadnot, and Lawrencia Moten, who evaluated the top contenders from across the HBCU football landscape.

Allen emerged as one of the most dynamic offensive playmakers in college football, combining speed, power, and vision to fuel Virginia Union’s success throughout the season. On the defensive side, Lunz anchored South Carolina State’s defense with disciplined, high-IQ play, earning praise for his ability to read offenses and shift momentum in critical moments.
