She the People President & founder, Aimee Allison, filed lawsuit against Filmmaker, Tyler Perry, and actress, Terri Vaughn over copyright infringement name of his latest Netflix series, She the People. The lawsuit was filed on May 19th, according Law 360.
“The Series echoes many of the same themes regarding Black women’s experiences in politics that Ms. Allison addresses through her activism under the SHE THE PEOPLE mark, albeit in a slightly different format,” according to the complaint.
Allison posted a video ahead of the release date on May 22nd, explaining her reason for filing the lawsuit and the importance in protecting your ideas/originality.
“When I began She the People, I poured nearly a decade into giving life to that idea.
Turning it into a platform that amplifies the leadership and power of Black and Brown women. That phrase-those words-carried weight. And they still do,” she wrote.

“But here’s the truth: There are always people watching. People who see the value in what you’ve built-and think they’re entitled to use it. To take the work, the sweat, the clarity of your vision— and profit from it. It’s a story as old as time,” she added.
According to Newsome, Allison alleged that she had previously contracted with Vaughn to develop a docuseries based on the “She the People” concept and Vaughn and Perry’s Netflix series pulls in many of the themes and frames from her work.
She the People is a California-based non profit organization , founded in 2018 by Allison that prepare women of color in political leaders.
