Stephen A. Smith Says He Has “No Relationship” with LeBron James Despite Public Apology

The long-simmering tension between ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith and Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James shows no signs of easing. On August 15, 2025, Smith declared there is “no relationship” between the two men, stressing that mutual dislike remains and that he has no intention of reconciling. Despite the rift, he said he will continue covering James strictly from a professional standpoint.

How the Rift Began

The feud traces back to January 28, 2025, when Smith criticized James’ eldest son, Bronny, during an episode of First Take. Smith argued that Bronny was not ready for the NBA, framing his entry into the league as the product of nepotism rather than merit. He went so far as to “plead” with LeBron to stop allowing his son to be “exposed” on the professional stage—a remark that significantly escalated tensions.

Courtside Confrontation

The dispute spilled into the public eye during a Lakers–Knicks matchup in March 2025, when LeBron confronted Smith courtside. Witnesses reported that James objected to the personal nature of the criticism, particularly because it targeted his son, and made his frustrations clear in front of fans and cameras.

Public War of Words

The confrontation sparked weeks of public sparring. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, James emphasized that while he accepts professional scrutiny of his game, “When you take it and you get personal… it’s my job not only to protect my damn household.”

Smith, in turn, doubled down. He accused James of lying, branded him a “bully,” and mocked the media coverage of the feud as resembling a “Taylor Swift tour” given how often the drama was replayed.

Apology Without Reconciliation

The debate took another turn when Smith, during an on-air tirade, falsely claimed James had skipped Kobe Bryant’s memorial service. After widespread backlash, Smith corrected the statement and issued a public apology. However, he stood by his other critiques, refusing to walk back his comments on Bronny.

As of now, the standoff remains unresolved. While Smith insists he will continue analyzing James’ performances on the court, both men appear unwilling to mend fences off of it.
