Jo’Majze Larry, a 15-year-old Indiana teen, has been sentenced to 100 years in prison after being convicted in a 2025 gang-related shooting that killed 26-year-old Dayla Swain and injured two others.
Larry was sentenced on July 29th to 50 years for murder and an additional 50 years for participating in a criminal organization.
Under Indiana law, the criminal organization enhancement is intended to address crimes committed by individuals acting as part of an organized criminal enterprise rather than as isolated offenders. Prosecutors say the law recognizes that criminal organizations pose a greater threat to public safety because they coordinate criminal activity, recruit others to participate in crimes, and often commit offenses to benefit the organization.
According to the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office, Larry’s sentence reflects both his murder conviction and his involvement in gang-related criminal activity.
The criminal organization statute is codified under Indiana Code Title 35, Article 45, Chapter 9. While the law has been amended over the years, legislation enacted in 2016 increased penalties for certain offenses involving criminal organizations, including crimes involving firearms and assisting members of criminal organizations.
Co-defendant Rashawn Samuels, 19, was sentenced to 125 years in prison, while another co-defendant, Kyree Craver, previously received a 90-year sentence. A fourth defendant, Rejon Smith, has not yet been scheduled for trial.
According to FOX59, Swain was an innocent bystander who was killed during a retaliatory shooting intended to target a witness connected to a 2023 homicide.
Because Larry was 15 years old at the time of the offense, Indiana law allows him to petition for judicial sentence review after serving at least 20 years. However, this does not guarantee his sentence will be reduced; it only allows the court to review it.
