Upcoming Gotcha’ Back School Kickoff Aims to Foster Academic Achievement, Community Engagement, and HBCU Opportunities

Fayetteville, NC: The Group Theory, is proud to host its 18th annual, Gotcha’ Back School Kickoff this Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the Crown Complex, located at 1960 Coliseum Drive; Fayetteville, NC. The family-focused programming event, which is free and open to the public, will feature something for every community member, such as college readiness, civic engagement, resources, and school supplies.

The 18th Annual Gotcha’ Back School Kickoff, starting at 11 a.m., promises a diverse range of activities, such as but not limited to community resources, free backpacks and school supplies, prize giveaways, free food, and live entertainment, ensuring a day of excitement and engagement for the Cumberland County community.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Candidate’s Fair, presented by the Fayetteville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, will connect residents with 2025 local election candidates, provide on-site voter registration, and feature youth-led discussions. Following the candidate’s fair, the NAACP Junior Board will host a Youth Symposium at 2:30pm. The discussion will include HBCU graduates, sharing their college experiences, advice, and career readiness tip to prepare the youth, according to the event flyer.

From 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., the 8th Annual HBCU College Fair & Experience—in partnership with Cumberland County Schools and the Beta Chi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.—will welcome admissions representatives from historically Black colleges and universities nationwide, offering same-day applications, scholarship information, financial aid information, and a Greek step show performance.

Fayetteville State Office of College Access Programs will host a Financial Aid Workshop for high school students, whose seeking financial assistance to attend college. Organizers have made it convenient for students by encouraging them to bring transcripts for on-site college opportunities, making the process easier and more accessible.
