The death of social media influencer Ashlee Jenae is leaving many with more questions than answers.
The Miami and Portland, Oregon–based content creator, who was known for sharing her life and inspiring others to live the life she once dreamed of, was found dead while on a birthday trip to Zanzibar, an archipelago off the coast of Tanzania. Her passing comes just days after celebrating her recent engagement to her fiancé, Joe McCann, and her birthday on April 5.
In the days leading up to her passing, Jenae, whose real name is Ashly Robinson, shared joyful moments from her trip through videos and photo carousels. She documented her engagement, romantic walks hand in hand with her partner, and intimate scenes surrounded by nature and wildlife. She also shared birthday highlights, including feeding giraffes, safari experiences, and celebratory décor. What appeared to be a dream come true, reflected in captions about living the life she had always envisioned, has now turned into a heartbreaking tragedy that sharply contrasts the joy she shared online.

The 31-year-old was “found unconscious in her villa at Zuri Zanzibar and rushed to a local hospital, where her death was confirmed hours later,” according to a statement from her family.
Authorities in the North Unguja Region, including Police Commander Benedict Mapujira, have stated that preliminary investigations indicate her death was a suicide by hanging, as reported by Mwananchi on April 13.
However, her family strongly disputes those claims.
“Nothing about this loss feels real. One moment she was celebrating love and life in true Ashly fashion, and the next, she was gone,” the family said in a statement.
“The suddenness, the unanswered questions, and the distance from home have made this tragedy even more overwhelming for our family,”
They added that they are placing their trust in Zanzibar authorities as the investigation continues.
Her family describes her as deeply loved, vibrant, and full of life, with so much ahead of her – making the timeline and circumstances surrounding her death feel even more troubling.
Concerns continue to grow due to unanswered questions about the timeline, limited official details, and the lack of publicly released autopsy results.
A police statement also alleged that, following an argument between Robinson and McCann, hotel management decided to separate the couple into different rooms.
Her social media pages are now filled with tributes, heartbreak, and increasing calls for a full and transparent investigation. Prayers for her loved ones, and for truth and justice to be served.
