Kendrick Lamar Introduces Viewers to the California Culture and Highlight Other Tributes in his Latest Video, Squabble Up

Kendrick Lamar recently released his latest video, “Squabble Up,” from his new album, GNX .

Squabble Up, directed by Calmatic, takes viewers through the lens of the California culture. The Compton native homage to California ranges from the 1980s Soul Train, the Compton Christmas parade, the Black Panther statue, Gangster Ministries with the ‘Jesus Saves Gangsters Too’ sign, a kid riding the tricycle from the 1993 LA-based movie Menace II Society, and other elements of the Hispanic & Black culture.

The video pays homage to California natives like Serena Williams, Ice-T, Trunk Boiz, and Nate Dogg.

In addition, he also honors Isaac Hayes (Black Moses album cover), filmmaker icon Spike Lee’s 1989 film, ‘Do the Right Thing’ with Radio Raheem.

Even Questlove from the hip-hop group The Roots praised Lamar for the video in which the backdrop is a replica of The Roots’ music video, The Next Movement.

Questlove created a post with a screenshot of the two videos (Next Movement & Squabble Up) side by side. In his caption, the Philly native wrote, “I wanna thank @kendricklamar for acknowledging something I thought none saw or cared about. Feeling seen is a great feeling and I don’t take it for granted.”

Peeps, what other homage and tributes did you notice in the video?
