Netflix is gearing up to release Ruth & Boaz, also known as R&B, a faith-based romance produced by Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin. The film premieres worldwide on Sept. 26, 2025, offering a modern reimagining of the biblical love story of Ruth and Boaz.
Modern Retelling of a Classic
The story follows Ruth Moably, played by Serayah McNeill, a rising hip-hop artist in Atlanta who leaves the music industry after a personal tragedy. She relocates to Tennessee to care for Naomi, her late boyfriend’s mother, portrayed by Phylicia Rashad.
In Tennessee, Ruth meets Boaz, played by Tyler Lepley. Their journey explores themes of faith, healing, and resilience, while also confronting Ruth’s unresolved past. At the heart of the film is the unexpected bond Ruth forms with Naomi, who becomes the maternal figure she never had.
Cast and Crew
The film stars Serayah and Lepley in the lead roles, alongside Rashad, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Jermaine Dupri, Lecrae Moore, Gregalan Williams, Nijah Brenea, Walnette Santiago, and James Lee Thomas.

Ruth & Boaz is directed by Alanna Brown (Trees of Peace), with a screenplay by Michael Elliot and Cory Tynan. Perry and Franklin produce, joined by executive producers Angi Bones, Tony L. Strickland, and Bart Lipton.
First in a Faith-Based Partnership
The movie marks the first project in a multi-picture, faith-based deal between Tyler Perry Studios, Franklin Entertainment, and Netflix. Franklin has said the idea was inspired by a sermon series on the Book of Ruth, highlighting the absence of modern adaptations featuring people of color in lead roles.
Why It’s Generating Buzz?
The film offers a fresh take on faith-based storytelling, blending biblical themes with contemporary settings. At its core, it explores identity, resilience, and love in unexpected places, giving the story a universal appeal. Backed by a high-profile creative team, with Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin known for culturally resonant and uplifting projects, the film highlights representation by placing diverse leads at the forefront of a narrative rooted in scripture. Adding to its impact is a notable supporting cast that brings together acclaimed actors and music icons such as Babyface Edmonds and Jermaine Dupri.
What Audiences Can Watch For?
Audiences will be looking at how the film balances timeless biblical themes of loyalty and faith with modern struggles. The chemistry between Serayah and Lepley will be pivotal, as will the film’s portrayal of Ruth’s transition from Atlanta’s music scene to small-town Tennessee.
Strong production values in cinematography and music are also expected to play a key role in shaping the contrast between Ruth’s past and present.
Looking Ahead
With its combination of scripture-inspired storytelling and contemporary drama, Ruth & Boaz is poised to connect with both faith-driven and mainstream audiences. Netflix is positioning the film as one of its marquee inspirational titles for 2025, and early buzz suggests strong anticipation for its mix of romance, spirituality, and cultural resonance.
