The Presidents of Alabama State and Florida A&M Condemned FAMU Band Announcer Joe Bullard For Calling ASU’s Honey Beez “The New Face of Ozempic”

The presidents of Alabama State University (ASU) and Florida A&M University (FAMU) have condemned a derogatory remark made by FAMU band announcer, Joe Bullard, about ASU’s Honey Beez dance team during a halftime performance.

The incident took place on Saturday, September 27, 2025 in Tallahassee FL, as Alabama State’s band exited the field. Bullard was heard calling the Honey Beez “the new face of Ozempic,” referencing a prescription medication used for weight loss and type 2 diabetes management. Shock gasp from his remark were heard from the crowd in the video.

ASU President Dr. Quinton Ross denounced the remark in a statement, calling it “absolutely unacceptable.”

“While we recognize the spirit of competition, there is no place for disparaging or demeaning remarks directed at our scholars,” Ross said.

“The Honey Beez, along with the Mighty Marching Hornets, dedicate countless hours to their craft to deliver unforgettable, show-stopping performances that embody the pride and excellence of Alabama State University. To have their artistry disrespected after such a performance is absolutely unacceptable.”

Ross added that he had spoken with FAMU President Marva Johnson and the Southwestern Athletic Conference commissioner, both of whom expressed agreement with Bullard’s concerns.

In response, Johnson issued her own statement apologizing to the Honey Beez, the Mighty Marching Hornets, President Ross, and Alabama State as a whole.

“The Honey Beez represent discipline, school pride, and a performance tradition respected nationwide,” Johnson said.

“To have their dedication and artistry diminished by a thoughtless comment does not reflect the values or respect we hold for our colleagues at Alabama State University or for the broader HBCU community.”

Meanwhile, Miami rapper Luther Campbell, also known as “Uncle Luke,” released a statement defending his longtime friend while urging accountability short of termination.

“I stand with my friend Joe Bullard, who I’ve known for over 30 years. I will not forsake him in these difficult times. I know in my heart that he would take back the words he chose, and he deeply regrets them,” Campbell said.

“Joe has given so much to this university and to people who look up to him around the world. I believe the right path forward is for Joe to publicly and directly apologize to the young ladies who did not deserve this, paired with appropriate disciplinary action – but not termination.”

As of now, Bullard has not publicly apologized.
